Granite Vs Quartz The Great Debate

What Countertop Is Right For You?

It’s the age-old debate of Granite vs. Quartz countertop and depending on who you ask you’ll get different answers for different reasons. Today we are going to help you decide what countertop is right for you and if there is anything to this argument beyond the aesthetics.

Granite

100% natural stone that is mined from quarries where molten rock has cooled over time. It’s extremely hard and durable so its perfect for a kitchen or bathroom that gets lots of use but still needs to stand out. It comes in many different colors and patterns that form during the cooling process. Granite can be found all over world making each piece unique depending on location and duration of the natural cooling process over time. Because of the uniqueness of each piece, and the location of the quarries, granite might run you a little more but its guaranteed to be one of a kind. Depending on your style and how much material you need for you project this could be a plus or a minus for you. That unique piece of rock you have for a countertop is also going to come with a little maintenance to ensure that your investment is taken care of. Granite is porous and can trap bacteria and other microscopic particles in the stone. Having your Granite countertops sealed once a year, along with soap and water daily, should keep your countertops clean just like anything else.

Quartz

Similar in many ways to granite with just a touch of manmade help. Quartz consists of about 90-95% natural quartz and 5-10% resin. When the quartz arrives from the quarry it’s then ground up and mixed with the resin to create a solid nonporous surface. This means you have a near maintenance free countertop once it is installed. Quartz has exploded in popularity in the last few years because of the combination durability and customization. It has ability to look just like granite but keep the consistency, desired color, and pattern throughout the whole slab. This is great for getting exactly what you want, but you sacrifice those one of a kind features. Being man made makes quartz a little more environmentally friendly as well, if you can use a local or regional manufacturer. It won’t have to be mined and then shipped overseas from exotic locations.
